Transport from China: Sea, Rail, or Air?

Choosing the right transportation method from China affects much more than delivery time and logistics costs. It also has a direct impact on customs clearance, required documentation, customs valuation, and the efficiency of the entire import process. For this reason, the choice of transport should never be based solely on the lowest price.

Transport as Part of the Supply Chain

Transportation is an integral part of the supply chain, involving the manufacturer, supplier, freight forwarder, carrier, customs broker, and importer.

To ensure a smooth import process, not only must the goods arrive on time, but all documentation and data must also be accurate and complete. Even the best-planned shipment can be delayed if the required documents are incomplete or fail to meet customs requirements.

Sea Freight

Sea freight is the most common solution for importing large volumes of goods, including full container loads (FCL) and less-than-container loads (LCL). It offers the lowest transportation cost per unit, making it the preferred option for cost-efficient imports. However, successful sea freight requires careful planning, including transit times, customs clearance, port and terminal charges, and inland transportation after the cargo reaches its destination.

Rail Freight

Rail freight offers a balance between sea and air transportation. It provides faster transit times than ocean shipping while remaining more cost-effective than air freight. However, it is not suitable for every shipment. The decision to use rail transport should take into account the available routes, service availability, transportation costs, and the nature of the goods being imported.

Air Freight

Air freight is the fastest, but also the most expensive, shipping method. It is commonly used for high-value products, urgent deliveries, seasonal goods, and commercial samples. When importing batteries, chemicals, or other regulated products, it is essential to verify transportation and documentation requirements before shipment.

Courier Services

Courier services are an excellent option for shipping samples and small consignments. For regular commercial imports, however, they are often less cost-effective and may provide less control over documentation and customs clearance than traditional freight solutions.

How Do Incoterms Affect Transportation?

Incoterms define which party is responsible for arranging transportation, paying freight costs, assuming transport-related risks, and preparing the required shipping documentation.

The Incoterms® 2020 rules include terms applicable to all modes of transport as well as rules designed specifically for sea and inland waterway transport. For this reason, the chosen transportation method should always be evaluated together with the delivery terms specified in the sales contract.
